Mechanisms to Curb Political Corruption

Corruption is the number one problem in today's functioning of the countries in the world, starting from the less developed countries and ending with the highly developed countries in the world. Corruption has existed for a long time, and countries and its leaders throughout history and up to the present day, no matter how much they fight to eradicate it, it still leaves its traces and cannot be completely eradicated.

The term corruption - leads to the fact that it is about some kind of abuse, defective procedures and actions by individuals or groups, corruption. Corruption represents abuse of entrusted powers or power for the achievement of private goals. I believe that throughout history and the past, as well as today, there is no individual who has not encountered the term corruption during his life. Corruption is one of the essential problems of modern life.

Corruption includes a large number of individual (human actions and behaviors) such as: bribery, influencing certain individuals in a position, nepotism, promising to receive a reward for completed specific work, etc. There is corruption literally from the lowest to the highest level (from petty to high corruption) according to the hierarchical organization in society and the distribution of power.

As a mechanism that should be taken to prevent political corruption, first of all, large prison sentences or other types of punishments should be introduced, which would be applied to those who through corruption acquired large wealth in a criminal way.

The Republic of North Macedonia, as a country aspiring to join the European Union, has shown a great fight against political corruption over the past years. However, as a country in transition over the past years, as well as a country that in the past 30 years ago was part of another system, as a country it is still struggling to defeat political corruption with mechanisms and laws that could reduce corruption.

Such is the criminal code, which is in the process of changes, which would increase the penalties for political officials who abuse their position by 3 times. Such increases would certainly reduce the percentage of corrupt practices.

Also, the main problem is that there is corruption at every possible level, from the lowest to the highest level. It applies from the most ordinary counter worker to directors and people in high positions. A big problem is that the citizens themselves also participate in corruption, normally in the interest of achieving their goals, they see corruption as the easiest way. Corruption is mostly represented in public administration, state health, education, courts and judicial authorities, public prosecutor's offices, etc.
